1999 Bollinger, Grande Année
|
|
La Grande Année is only made in exceptional years and 1999 was a Grande
Année indeed! Five years’ maturation on lees has added a biscuity
complexity. Notes of honey, minerals and citrus fruits complete this very fine
portrait of a Champagne House at the top of its game. This is serious enough to
serve with food; try it with smoked salmon or caviar starters.
Bollinger's president, Ghislain de Montgolfier describes Grand Annee
1999 "as a superb wine, a cross-over of the powerful 1996 and the rich
1989". We couldn't agree more. The overall tasting profile is a very
typical Bollinger with rich marzipan aromas, and notes of toffee and bread
yeast. The palate is equally charming, yet powerful and structured,
with nutty aromas, and some signs of maturity. Another great vintage
for Bollinger.

"Sumptuous and luxurious Champagne, bursting with finesse and class. The
explosion of berry fruit on the multi-layered nose is followed by a broad,
seamless palate that fills the mouth with delicate but deep flavours of red
fruit and a touch of bottle-age character. Delicious and long. Up to 5
years."
