An extremely impressive and classic Ormes which does everything it should. It stood up well to 2006 Pichon-Baron. Liquorice, blackberry and blackcurrant leaf, lush, ripe fruit cut with lovely fresh acidity, rounded off with soft, mouth-filling tannins. Excellent value; definitely one of the best buys in Bordeaux. Drink now-2018+.

Named after the old elm trees ('Ormes') that grew in its grounds, near the hamlet of Pez, this is atypical for St Estèphe in its sheer charm and richness of fruit. It is mouthfilling and modern without losing its sense of origin - its powerful tannins are typical of 2006 and it brims with earthy St Estèphe character. Right from the lush, sweet pure cassis nose to the lovely black cherry finish this is extremely seductive, helped in no small part by a large splash of Merlot in the blend. This is the best value wine you will find in St Estèphe in 2006 and in my opinion, the best Ormes ever.

The nose has a striking, focussed intensity, with enticing aromas of very fresh black fruits and a perfumed note of violets. On the palate this is a delicious and hugely impressive example of modern styled St Estephe. There are firm but superbly integrated, fine knit tannins and a precise, refreshing acidity. There is a superb brooding intensity to the flavours of blackberries and black cherries, which mingle with toasty, creamy notes. The finish is long and crisp with all elements in perfect balance. For me this is the best value of the vintage and is an outstanding value.
