2005 Teira Zinfandel, Sonoma County, California

Zinfandel has a reputation for jammy alcoholic wines, on account of its propensity to raisin. What caught my eye with this relatively modest priced wine was its cool black fruit profile and sense of delicious harmony. Deep in colour, the clean-cut nose delights with blueberry and blackberry pie aromas, along with a cool Sonoma County espresso note. What’s more, the palate is finely balanced between fruit, structure and alcohol: the creamy briary fruit flavours clearly at the forefront while structure and alcohol play second fiddle. A great all-rounder, food-wise.

Not everyone enjoys the cold potato spice of the syrah grape, so for some, California’s zinfandel may be a better choice with the boldest festive game meats. If so, this restrained 13.5 per cent alcohol Teira zin is the one to serve. Blessed with delicious, velvety, blackberry fruit, this is tailor-made for big festive food and would happily even accompany turkey and all the trimmings.

Wild blackberry, chocolate and espresso on the nose. The barrel influence is less obvious on the palate, which has bright, brambly berry fruit without any residual sweetness.

Drier and more sophisticated than most Zins. Fruit from old vines in Dry Creek and Russian River Valleys.
