A traditional style of Châteauneuf, most of its fruit sourced from the central Crau plateau, where the pudding stones lend topographical charm and utilitarian purpose. The Marets have put 65 % Grenache into the 2006, the balance being made up of Syrah, Mourvèdre and a hint of Cinsault. Bay, thyme and dark plumy fruit dominate the nose and the palate has all the charm and approachability that one expects from this vintage, allied to the quality that one can rely on from this Domaine. Tasted recently (October 2010) I was impressed by its balance and long herbal finish; try with wood pigeon or venison stew!

Ripe, heady Châteauneuf from the appellation's central plateau with intense black olive, tar and savoury/spicy fruit flavours. Will age for 5+ years.

Note the hefty 15.5% ABV of this Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah blend, aged 18 months in a combination of vats and smaller barrels. Lovely intensity on the nose, the mineral-focused cherry and blackberry fruit quite tight and hints of chocolate, coal dust and roses adding subtle complexity. This is firm and racy on the palate, the juiciness of the fruit combining with the tannins and a certain broadening richness.
