2004 Barolo DOCG, Cru La Serra, Az. Agr. Marcarini
|
|
To Manuel Marchetti his 2004s Barolos remind him of 2001 or
1999, either way both excellent vintages for his pair of single vineyard
wines. La Serra perches vertiginously below the walls of La Morra,
Barolo's highest village lying directly across the valley from Monforte
d'Alba. Compared to its sibling Brunate, La Serra's sandy marl soils and 13
year-old vines consistently deliver a more ethereal fruit character: the rich,
taut black-strap molasses, floral, black cherry-stone conjures up visions of
greatness, confirmed by a magnificent presence, sinewy, savoury &
serious.

Quite developed and leathery on the nose with notes of sweet plums. Full firm
and quite spicy with long fresh finish.

A sweet welcoming plump plum nose. Delightfully bright damson and cranberry
fruit and citrus zest. Lots of energy and a dry spicy finish. Bracing tannins.
Seems almost ready to drink!

"Marcarini's 2004 Barolo La Serra reveals floral aromatics and a candied, spicy
quality to its red cherry fruit. Made in a linear, focused style, this taut
Barolo offers outstanding persistence on the palate and refined ripe tannins.
It is a lovely La Serra"
