From one of the three remaining distilleries in Campbeltown, this 16 year old
malt offers a nose of dark toffee, violets and brine with the succulence cut by
distant smoke and air dried ham as hints of carbolic soap drift through.
An unctuous and jammy palate delivers some late summer fruit and stewed prunes
which mingle with cinnamon, cloves and oak on a lingering finish
A heavy weighty plug of dry peat: almost certainly the moss here was cut from
very deep in the trench…a to-die-for delivery: the sweetness proffers a
wonderful sharpness, natural caramels are light and attracts rich
barley…and then of course, that dull throbbing smoke…Spices which
have formed in the middle ground have a louder say and the deftly sweetened
vanilla see us out. Here’s a peaty nugget! I bet Berrys’ own Dougie
McIvor made a pact with the devil for his beloved Charlton to be relegated to
their natural place in the third tier of the English football in exchange for
getting hold of a cask like this. A good bit of business!
