To our mind, Ch. St. Georges, Côte Pavie is making some of the best value wine that Bordeaux has to offer. The 2006 is approachable now, if given some air, but will be perfect in 12-18 months time. The wine has luscious dark, broody fruit that is underpinned by well integrated tannin and cigar-box spice.

If you want a claret that's drinking well now but will age for a few years, this is worth putting in your cellar. Light and elegant with sweet Merlot fruit.

The nose marries classic pencil-shaving and cedar with leafy blackcurrant fruit. On the palate this wine has lovely harmony with the black fruits edged by tobacco, clove and peppery spice, and the sinewy tannin and acidity giving some length and structure. Medium-bodied and very classic in style, it is a wine that should cellar well for several years.
