2005 Paras Vineyard Nebbiolo, Mt. Veeder AVA, Napa Valley, CA

Mt.Veeder's shallow mountain soils and the 390 metre elevation seem to have replicated the Alba hills perfectly, such is the richly aromatic nose resonating with rose petals, tar, a whiff of smoke and even a suggestion of sage. Jim Paras has certainly done his honework in selecting the Michet clone, heeding the requirement to curb the Nebbiolo's bounty for the palate continues impressively with suave yet detailed delivery, culminating in a neat, tea-leaf dry finish; aged for 18 months in 20% new french oak. The best new world Nebbiolo I've ever tasted. Delicious now with pork belly but should develop nicely over the next 5 to 8 years.
