2007 Placet, Herencia Remondo, Rioja

For those who think that Viura is inherently uninspiring, this wine should make them think again. Alvaro Palacios has built an enviable reputation from championing lesser-known regions and unfashionable varieties. This white Rioja, although of course not from a lesser-known region, is a fine testament to the expressive potential of the Viura variety, which Alvaro describes, perhaps a little extravagantly, as ‘the Chardonnay of the South’. Light straw colouring, then a nose of pear, white pepper and vanillin. The palate is fascinating, with fruit, butter, nuts and vanillin all evidenced. Richly textured and long.

100% Viura. Cream, butter, melon, banana and apple. Dry, ripe and smooth with a caramel finish that blends nicely with the tropical style of fruit and white flower aromatics. The oak is bold but well integrated and never dominates, and the crispness is very refreshing.
