The Martinborough terraces are the origins of the first great New Zealand Pinot Noirs, and they remain the focal point for Burundian styles, like this fine pinot, whose stylish red-berry fruit perfume and delicate oak spice with a seamlessly pure, strawberry flavour, opulence and silky texture make it a seductively rich, yet subtle Marlborough red.

Chris 'Hopper' Archer has marked his inaugural vintage at this Martinborough estate with a tiny quantity (71 dozen bottled) of this excellent Pinot Noir, a selection of the best fruit (from clones 667, 777 and Abel) from their silty, calcareous gravel Terrace terroir. The result is a wine which shows both sensuality as well as breed. Dare I say it but the nose hints at Musigny, such is its heady smoky violet scent while the focussed palate is both suave and finely poised. Gorgeous now, this wine should develop beautifully over the next 5 to 8 years. Perfect with salmon.
