Nytetimber is by some distance the best of the English Champagne look-alikes.
The Chardonnay Cuvée is relatively rare, and although the ageing regime
is as for the Classic Cuvée, the style differs, with an emphasis on
elegance above all, its rich buttery fruit finely entwined with a fine
minerality, its texture long and satisfying, worthy of comparison with some of
the better Blancs de Blancs from champagne itself...
Nyetimber's history has been colourful, its vinous ownership having passed from the American Stuart Moss, via the flamboyant pop impressario Andy Hill to the Dutch entrepreneur Eric Heerema. In the more distant past it was built by Henry VIII for Anne of Cleves, although she never actually took ownership, thanks, famously, to Holbein's pictorial exaggeration of her charms.
