2004 Aglianico del Vulture Aquila del Vulture, Lagala Viticoltori

To see the full extent of what Aglianico can do, you have to dig deep...Berry Brothers and Rudd are currently selling a wonderful Aglianico del Vulture Aquila Del Vulture from 2004, which tastes like smoked, sugarless fruit cake, with an intense prune-like essence to it and a sniff of juniper and even rosemary that makes me think of the shrub-covered hillsides it has come from.

Densely packed with smoky dried fruits and herbal notes, this lush yet refined wine owes its stature partly to the terroir surrounding Mount Vulture but also to a selection of the best fruit; a prime example of the potential of this underrated grape variety. Drinking now till 2012, along with game of the feathered variety.
