2007 Au Bon Climat Pinot Noir, Santa Maria Valley, California

Pinot Noir is one of California's increasingly strong suits, although quality at the right price can be hard to come by. Within that category I would include Jim Clendenen's silky, enticingly raspberryish 2007 Au Bon Climat Santa Maria Pinot Noir.

This is the perfect introduction - not only to ABC's wines, but also to well-made US Pinot Noir. Beautifully pure and vibrant red fruits and a soft, tannic underbelly makes this perfect for drinking now and over the next couple of years. The baby of the range, but very much in ABC's exceptional style.

This was/is pure essence of Pinot Noir - beautifully balanced and fragrant with lots of fruit and elegance and no trace of superfluous sweetness or alcohol....if you like gentle, fruity, dancing Pinot Noir that has no excess of tannin, acidity, sugar or alcohol but just enough of all four to make it a great drink already and any time over the next two or possibly three years.
