2006 Crôzes-Hermitage, les Trois Chenes Domaine Emmanuel Darnaud

Emmanuel Darnaud is one of the new generation of rising stars in Crozes Hermitage. An energetic young man who believes passionately in the concept of terroir, he blends six or seven different cuvees into one brilliant wine which embodies the traditional spicy, peppery virtues of Crozes Hermitage but also boasts a staggering richness and density of ripe fruit on the palate. This can be drunk young when its fruity elegance is to the fore but it also has the structure to age gracefully for 5-6 years.

Another new estate for me, Darnaud’s 2006 Crozes-Hermitage Les Trois Chenes stood out in my tastings. It boasts a deep ruby/purple hue as well as notes of licorice, camphor, spring flowers, and black currants, supple tannins, medium to full body, a lovely texture, beautiful concentration, and outstanding purity and length. Drink it over the next 7-8 years.
