2000 Malvasia, Cask 44a Barbeito

Ricardo De Freitas decided, after the long and hot summer (in Madeira in any event) of 2007, that this cask of Malvasia, cask 44A no less, had a sufficiently idiosyncratic profile and taste to merit a bottling on its own, thereby immediately conferring relative rarity and a certain fascination. Just over a thousand bottles were produced, after the angels had had their share. With a bright straw colouring and a lively, almost grapey nose, this is distinctive indeed. Madeira in a major key, its charms feminine and supple, its acidity refreshing but balanced.
