2006 Côte-Rôtie, Sereine Noire, Domaine Gangloff

Sereine Noire is the old local synonym for Syrah, referring to the original thick-skinned variety, now propogated by sélection massale and reputed to give more concentration and colour than any clonal stock. That certainly seems to be the case with this superb example from Yves Gangloff, a wonderfully aromatic and powerful wine, complete with benchmark notes of crushed pepper, violets and tapenade on the nose and a earthy core to the palate, garlanded by raspberry coulis and bay-leaf.
