2004 is proving to be an exceptional vintage in Rioja; some indeed think it
even better than 2001, which was lauded from the outset. The Tinto Reserva is
made from 91% Tempranillo, 6% Garnacha and 3% Mazuelo, its grapes treated to
generous maceration then an even more generous period of elevage, which lasted
for over two years, in new and semi-new American vats. The wine is terrific,
distinctly Rioja with its cherry fruit, and herbal and vanillin profile, yet
also with a depth of flavour which has harnessed the ripeness with subtle and
slightly smoky tannins all of which underlines the complexity of structure.
Gastronomically versatile, the wine will age extremely well.
