The Sussex Downs continue to provide a rich seam of inspiration for the
patriotic fizz drinker, their geological make-up informed by the same
Portlandian sub-strata as Champagne itself, and their winemakers now assuming
the confidence to exploit this happy coincidence. 2006, although we may not
remember it thus, was a relatively warm summer, with, apparently 26 days when
the temperature got over 29 degrees…..perfect for the ripening of
Chardonnay! This is all confirmed with the Grosvenor, which marries citric with
more tropical fruit on the nose, and has gentle flavours, which put one in mind
of entering the Pâtisserie on a Spring day. Their best wine to date.

Some would say that RidgeView makes the best sparkling wine in England and
that’s by no means damning with faint praise because we’d defy most
people to tell this fine fizz, with its citrus-zesty freshness, its tiny
pinprick-bubbled moussse and the biscuity flavours derived from yeast autolysis
from the real Champagne McCoy.
