John Ramsay, the ‘Malt Master’ for The Glenrothes since the early 1990s, retired in June 2009. He has been the genius behind the whisky’s exceptional quality, his signature has been on all fourteen labels since 2004. We asked John to make an expression that he would be proud to sign his name to for the very last time. He has identified a pocket of 2nd fill American Oak sherry casks from Vintages ranging from 1973 to 1987. These he has married, reduced very gradually in strength - without chill filtering - to produce a Glenrothes that will stand as his legacy to The Glenrothes. John Ramsay’s flavour notes underline the dark chocolate character, blood oranges and vanilla notes of this malt.

"The complexity of this exceptionally balanced Glenrothes reveals itself over time; the supple texture allows oak notes, spice, vanilla, blood orange and tropical fruit to vie for attention but discreetly. A maturity and richness that befits John Ramsay’s contribution to the whisky industry."

Rich, complex and aromatic, with dark chocolate and fragrant, sappier top notes of lilies and citrus. With water it opens up to give vanilla-dusted prunes and cherries and slightly more bitter note of chocolate and liquorice, before moving into a palate-filling treacle-sponge and custard finish.
