Jean Michel Cazes, the doyen of Chateau Lynch Bages in Bordeaux, spent several
years in the early part of this century searching for the ideal terroir to
accompany his ‘Grand Vin de Bordeaux’. In the sleepy hamlet of La
Livinière, its famous bell tower surrounded by Cyprus Trees and green
oaks, Jean Michel located just such a place. Already recognised and rewarded
with its own superior appellation, Minervois la Livinière goes from
strength to strength and is now recognised as the origin of some the best red
wines in the South of France.
Made from 65% Syrah, 13% Carignan, 12 % Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, and treated to 15 months in Barrique, the 2005 is an outstanding wine. The first impressions are of generosity and warmth, with black fruits, sousbois and subtle oak perfectly poised to lead one onto a palate which is equally seductive, the very fine and silky tannins providing more than adequate support for the impressive concentration of fruit. Perfect with game and hearty Southern fare.
