2002 UKC, Grand Cru, Mailly
|
|
2002 is the best vintage in Champagne since 1990, some say since 1985 or
1982………..in any event it has been much lauded and much
anticipated, and for some Houses ( Roederer Cristal for example!) it has been
and gone. Great, therefore, were the expectations for the Berrys’ UKC
2002 …..and we have not been disappointed.
Whether or not it is axiomatic that great vintages always demonstrate the true worth of Grand Cru villages is a debate for elsewhere; but what is evidenced here is a concentration of very high quality fruit ( 70% Pinot Noir and 30% Chardonnay) that has enjoyed 48 months on its lees and thereafter valuable post-disgorgement ageing.
This wine is now really getting into its stride as a very fine example of quality Champagne; notes of yeast and brioche harmoniously entwine with ripe buttery fruit, all backed up by mirror-bright acidity and a fine texture. The best UKC vintage yet; chapeau to Mailly Grand Cru!

Typically powerful leesy nose with Pinot fruit (raspberry, cherry) and rounded
weighty fruit on the palate with an almond and citrus finish backed by a firm
structure and acidity. Promise of great things to come from what is widely
regarded as a great vintage.
