Imagine a portly gentleman smoking a very good cigar in a bakery which specialises in plum tarts and you will be able to get the gist of how this single malt whisky smells to me. A very complex array of bitter chocolate, nectarine, white flower and mandarin flavours unravel on the palate. It finishes with a dash of spice and the faintest nuance of smoke.

The Glen Mhor Distillery operated from 1892 until its final closure in 1983. The buildings were demolished in 1986 and a shopping centre was built on the site. Glen Mhor means ‘great Glen’, named after the Caledonian Canal from which it drew its water supply. This is a last chance to appreciate one of the great Inverness malts. Sadly, all three of the town’s distilleries have ceased. Pear juice and white chocolate aromas come to the fore with a drift of grassiness. There is sweet melon and considerable depth, some leather and tobacco. The palate is nicely textured showing fruitiness and confirming the nose. This well-composed Dram finishes leaving a juicy, delicately peaty, lasting impression.
