Opera Prima XVII, Vino da Tavola, Roagna, Barbaresco, Piedmont
In what seems a novel twist Luca Roagna blends vintages of Barbaresco under the 'Opera Prima' label; something in fact his father Alfredo started doing in 1982 to give brand homogeneity, albeit for only a few hundred cases! For me it also allows customers to tune into the unique Roagna style. This seventeenth release, XVII, draws on two successful vintages: 2000 & 2001 to give a deliciously gentle wine, draped with floral & herbal notes, subtle succulence, delicacy and refinement. Best enjoyed now & till 2013; give it some air and pair it with a pigeon. Moreish.

They decided in 1982 to make a champagne- cuvée style wine and this is a blend of two to four vintages (this particular bottling is mainly 2000 and 2001) of Nebbiolo grown in Barbaresco. Maceration for 70-90 days, and aged for two to six years in French oak casks. Kept for another two years in bottle. A really bold, exuberant cherry and strawberry nose. Supple, neat, sappy with touches of orange and roses and tea. Mouthwateringly fresh and unexpectedly long. Real pleasure in a glass here.
