Very bright, deep crimson. Smells almost overripe! Some burnt notes and even a hint of oak (can that be..?) and only then settles down into the tannic depths. Extremely youthful and unformed at this stage with, apparently, lots of disparate elements. Note of greenness on the finish. Not sure about this one. The oddest wine of the vintage?

From the 1991 vintage through 2003, the well-known producer Croft has received outstanding ratings in this journal. In that context the 2007 Croft Vintage Port is a mild disappointment. It is a straightforward effort with an attractive nose of damp earth, mineral, blackberry, and plum with herbal notes in the background. On the palate it comes off as a bit narrow, lacking in volume compared to the top wines of the vintage. It is firmly structured and is likely to evolve for up to a decade but is not a candidate for extended cellaring.
