This celebrated winery takes its name from the bay at the eastern extremity of the Wairau Valley, which was named Cloudy Bay by Captain Cook on his voyage to New Zealand in 1770. The winery was originally founded by David Hohnen in 1985 and did not take long to establish itself as the icon of the Marlborough wine industry, originally for Sauvignon Blanc, but subsequently for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, as well as sparkling (Pelorus) and late harvest wines.
We have worked hard to secure an adequate allocation of these exciting wines. Cloudy Bay themselves describe their Chardonnay as ‘intriguing and textural’, because their aim is to weave in layers of texture through subtle work in the barrel cellar, without relying solely on the primary flavours of the grape.
With a vibrant citrus core, this rich, refreshing Chardonnay wine displays characteristics of grapefruit, fig, chamomile and pistachio. A delicious example of pure Marlborough fruit, this wine is fantastic now but will keep for a further five years or more.
