2005 Brunello di Montalcino, Az. Agr. San Giuseppe, Tuscany
(code: 75566B)
The 2005 Brunello San Giuseppe is a prodigious wine, if one still tightly
wrapped up in its swaddling clothes. Sure, it probably won't ever display the
breadth of fruit or density of 2004 but what it might lack in girth it will
surely make up in finesse...remember 1998, that most underrated vintage,
outscored by the easier if ultimately less successful 1997. Like its maker,
these wines are shy, preferring the shadows to the limelight, yet prepared to
yield, to be coaxed out their shells if the company's sympathetic. It may be a
little titillating now but in time...whoosh! Drinking till 2015 and beyond,
with a leg of something tender.
