From the high-trained vines of the greener Western tip of Spain, the frighteningly modish Albarino grape. 2009 looks set fair to be an outstanding vintage almost without exception over the tapestry of European vineyards, even as far west as Galicia, where the microclimate is unpredictable and more informed than most, inevitably, by the mighty Atlantic Ocean.Albarino is a relatively thick-skinned variety; in its best manifestations, such as this, the wine is rich, fullish of colour and wonderfully ripe, with notes of peach, green apple and white flowers. Behind this there is a gentle spice and balancing acidity. Traditionally most top Albarino is drunk locally, usually to accompany a plate of almonds or a hearty platter of fruits de mer. Very civilized.
