2009 Ch. Kirwan, Margaux

Dense red, well-extracted Cabernet fruit with intensity and spice, quite broad and spicy on the palate, good structure and acidity, fruit and aging potential.

Glowing crimson. Very sweet start. Something almost animal about this on the nose. Just a bit awkward in terms of oak – mellow and well seasoned enough?

A big, powerful Margaux that should age for 20+ years, this inky purple-colored wine exhibits notes of spring flowers intermixed with blackberries, raspberries and cassis. Some lead pencil shavings and toasty oak are also present in this powerful yet at the same time very pure, textured, full-throttle Kirwan. It needs about 5-7 years of cellaring and will be among the longest-lived wines of the vintage.

Wow. A subtle yet fabulous burst of fruit on the nose, with currant, mineral and flowers. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a fruity, beautiful finish. So pretty. Chewy. Big Kirwan.
