Now that summer's firmly here I grab the opportunity to return to the charms of the refreshing, medium-bodied wines of Beaujolais. As in many other regions of France, 2009 was a fantastic vintage in Beaujolais and the wines are drinking superbly now. Unashamedly fruity, with perfumed aromas which give way to fresh strawberry and red fruit characters with a pleasing weight across the palate. Delicious.

The domaine is situated in the hamlet of Le Tracot, near Regnié, a noted spot for its Beaujolais Villages. Over the past decade Jean-Paul has built up his holdings to include cuvées of Brouilly, Fleurie, Morgon and Moulin à Vent. Darker than the Chatoux wine at the same price served alongside. Real bite and savour. Quite dense for a Beaujolais. Real grip here. I’d start this at the end of northern hemisphere summer.
