One of the strengths of a truly great Bordeaux vintage like 2009 is that all the vineyards were blessed with healthy, ripe grapes and so from the loftiest Classified Growth down to the humblest Bordeaux Rouge there is a thread of high quality running through the wines.
If a winemaker cannot make a good wine from such fruit then he or she should perhaps seek an alternative career. Our Good Ordinary Claret has been consistently excellent for many years as a result of scrupulously careful selection at the time of creating the final blend, and in 2009 this task was rendered easier by the superlative fruit quality.
The Merlot component provides a wonderful, plump richness of berry fruit and plums to the core of the wine, while the Cabernet Sauvignon imbues it with a finesse, aromatic elegance and structure. There is harmony and balance, and the tannins are beautifully ripe so there is no austerity to the wine at all. Ready to drink now but capable of ageing for a few years, this is a worthy partner to a roast lamb dish or to hard cheese.

2009 was a great vintage across the board in Bordeaux, so it stands to reason our Good Ordinary Claret should be as well. Once again outdoing its name, this wine is juicy, succulent and quite frankly the best we've ever had to date, and at this price you can even afford to pour it for friends, if you can bear it. It's a shame we can't call it Damned Fine Quaffing Claret.
