And finally a serious, biodynamically certified red: Domaine Montirius
Garrigues Vacqueyras 2006 may be high in alcohol, but it has the structure
to contain it. Earthy, detailed and savoury, it embodies the
dry, herby flavours of the southern Rhône, but adds its own,
considerable, might. It's a universe away from Blossom Hill.

Purity and power are the keys in this Coteaux du Languedoc red; the Syrah lends
the former, with vibrant red berried fruit and a strand of minerality, which
juxtaposes notes of garrigue and aniseed. The Grenache lends the
warmth, and rounded palate profile; it is the tension between the linear and
the more rounded notes which provide the fascination here; for full and
eloquent expression the wine needs contact with the air. After the concentrated
and powerful 2005, the 2006 plays more on the elegance and linearity; the
distinctive violet perfume and dark fruit intensity still evidenced
however.

"The evocatively named Terrasses De Larzac, situated just to the NW of
Montpellier, is the location of the equally evocatively named Mas
Conscience, the husband and wife team of Laurent and Geneviève Vidal. The
alluvial terraces are well suited to white varieties, especially the
Vermentino, the highly aromatic Roussanne and, for a good luck, a soupçon of
Viognier. A nose of white flowers, grapefruit and honey may evoke the
breakfast table, but the wine itself is serious post meridian fare, with a
perfect balance between minerality and ripe fruit. Serious, long, and very
polished example."
