Ch. Villa Bel-Air, Graves -- Château Villa Bel Air -- France
Cab.Sauvignon Blend, 13% alc.
This is a benchmark Graves, showing both the generosity and the earthy, savoury notes that are so typical of its origins. However, the suave interpretation given by the team from Lynch-Bages gives a modern gloss to Graves’ more robust characteristics, with the result that this is an immediately gratifying wine, front-loaded with bright, fresh red berry fruit. The palate reasserts the sense of place, with a note of graphite mingling with the soft fruit notes. This really is tremendous value for money, pretty much ideal to drink now, but with the substance to still deliver over the next five years.
(Mark Pardoe MW, BBR Wholesale - Tasted at the St Emilion, Pomerol, Graves and Sauternes Cellar Tasting, 03/12/09)

True to its origins in Graves the wine is modern in style, bursting with gorgeous fruit and underpinned by ripe tannins. It shows real complexity on the nose. Seductive blackcurrant fruit with fruit cake and spice flavours too. On the palate, the tannins are firm but not tight and the lush, rounded fruit that help to make it expressive enough to enjoy now. The acidity and body are in balance and a streak of Graves minerality finish off the long length admirably. This is an approachable style of wine from a fabulous vintage- at a very reasonable price, considering the quality on show here!

La Legua Roble, Cigales D.O. -- La Legua -- Spain
Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, 13% alc.
From Cigales, in north-west Spain, a luscious, herb-tinged tempranillo with an added dash of Garnacha. Wonderfully ripe fruit is softened by six months in oak, which leaves it juicy and vibrant, with sour cherry flavours, hints of vanilla and subtle but firm tannins. It's a great value alternative to rioja or Ribera del Duero and a fine partner to spicy bean and chorizo stew.
(The Daily Telegraph - Top Wine Deals this Week - 16 Oct 09)

Cigales DO has earned a reputation for its bright, vivid reds with unbridled fruit flavours and producing wines which offer excellent value. La Legua is made from predominantly Tempranillo with just a dash of Garnacha and it offers of cassis and sweet spice notes. The black fruit flavours linger over a finish of earth and dried herbs. The richness has been expertly harnessed by six months of oak ageing.

Isabel Estate Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, NZ -- Isabel Estate -- New Zealand
Sauvignon Blanc, 13% alc.
Very pale straw colour ; pronounced grassy, gooseberry aroma, hints of lime and herby mint. Classic Marlborough bouquet. On the palate the wine has mouth-filling, ripe fruit, crisp acidity, but considerable depth of flavour, too, followed by a long, balanced finish. Even more complexity than usual, and a wine definitely capable of further development with a couple of years of bottle age.

Beaujolais, Vieilles Vignes, Alain Chatoux -- Alain Chatoux -- France
Gamay, 12.5% alc.
Delicate aromas of raspberries and tinned strawberries precede a palate which evokes a mouthful of summer fruit pudding. Lots of refreshing acidity on the finish and not overly jammy.
(Nicola Gilbert - London Shop Sales)

Alain Chatoux makes irrepressibly juicy Beaujolais from his ancient vines on steep hillside sites. This has nothing in common with the Beaujolais of the plains, but is a remarkably refreshing, poised and delicious Beaujolais.
