Mâcon-La Roche Vineuse, Olivier Merlin
--
Olivier Merlin
-- France
Chardonnay,
13% alc.
Made from younger vines (though some of these are now 20-years-old) and some
bought-in grapes, 2007 Mâcon-La Roche Vineuse is a charming, classy wine,
delicious as aperitif wine, but with enough fruit and flavour to work well with
salads or other lighter dishes. This wine has much more character than most
Macons.

Ch. de Cazeneuve, Les Calcaires, Pic-Saint-Loup
--
Château de Cazeneuve
-- France
Southern Rhône Blend,
13.5% alc.
Eponymous chalky soils and a blend 50/30/20, of -respectively- Syrah (more
Syrah than is usual in Pic-St. Loup), Grenache and Mourvèdre
(André Leenhardt is a great fan and a craftsman of Mourvèdre)
have created a wine rich in aroma and ripe red and black fruit. The nose sings
notes from the garrigue, with thyme, lavender and truffle evidenced; on the
palate there are rich blackberry notes underpinned by black olives and a
mineral substratum. A superbly textured wine, oaked but not over oaked,
powerful and distinctive, this will go well with pheasant or partridge.

Montefalco Rosso, 'Sololoro', Az. Agr. Fontecolle, Umbria
--
Cantina Fontecolle
-- Italy
Other Varieties,
13% alc.
The purist St James’s Street wine merchant Berry Bros & Rudd is not
where you would expect to find a first- class list of Italians, but I loved the
first vintage of this sangiovese grape-based red, topped up with tannic
sagrantino and even given a Gallic boost of one quarter’s worth of merlot
and cabernet sauvignon. The end blend is a surprisingly seductive and
swiggable, yet still savage, herb, violet and blueberry-stashed red.

Shadowfax Chardonnay, Victoria
--
Shadowfax
-- Australia
Chardonnay,
13.5% alc.
Shadowfax’s Chardonnay fruit is sourced mainly from growers around
Geelong, a coastal zone south-west of Melbourne, which benefits from long, cool
autumns, bringing the flavours to full maturity. Unoaked, its citrus,
nectarine, pear and grilled nut notes are kept in check by fine mineral
acidity.
