Jean-Noel Gagnard is one of the best known names in Chassagne-Montrachet. Though the eponymous Jean-Noel is still to be seen at the domaine he is long since retired, handing over to daughter Caroline L’Estimé in 1989. Having fine-tuned production and developed new markets, Caroline has been looking to expand by planting vineyards on the slopes just above the village of St Aubin, notably the single vineyard ‘Clos Bortier’. This  Hautes Côtes de Beaune is matured in oak barrels, though without using new wood. Since the wine is designed to be drunk relatively young it has been bottled with a screwcap.

Vacqueyras Domaine de la Charbonniére -- Domaine de la Charbonniere -- France

Domaine de la Charbonnière is better known for their peerless range of Châteauneufs- Du- Pape, the Marats are especially proud of their Vacqueyras property, located adjacent to the village of Gigondas in the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail. Etymologically Vacqueyras is an old Provençal word meaning valley of the stones, quite appropriate given the nature of the terroir here! The blend is specific; Grenache to add colour, aromatic intensity and alcoholic warmth, and Syrah, in an unusually high percentage, to offer elegance and ageing potential.

White Rhône Blend, 13% alc.
An unusual blend, but managed extremely successfully; the wine has a lot of personality, rather like the winemaker! The nose is both floral and fruity, with hints of guava and spice evidenced. The palate is both lively and textured, with notes of vanillin, white peach, honey and lemon grass all harmoniously entwined. Fresh and long on the finish, this would be a great match for Dover Sole, monkfish or even turbot.

With its elevated, granitic topography, Eden Valley is undoubtedly one of Australia's finest, coolest terroirs. This single-vineyard Chardonnay personifies these qualities: bright with pure, roasted hazlenut and freshly baked bread aromas; the weightier, buttery, lemon/lime, herb and creamy characters on the palate reminding us of its Aussie zip code. A worthy alternative to good Maconnais, especially with a chicken-based pastry dish.
