Bourgogne Les Cras, Domaine Olivier Merlin -- Olivier Merlin -- France
Pinot Noir, 12.5% alc.
Bourgogne Les Cras has blossomed since bottling. The bouquet is beautifully perfumed, a sensual aromatic style of red fruit pinot. The palate shows impressive purity too. A lovely burgundy.

Vacqueyras, Les Christins, Domaine Perrin Père et Fils -- Perrin & Fils -- France
Southern Rhône Blend, 13.5% alc.
From the clay plateau of Vacqueyras, a powerfully structured wine, made from three quarters Grenache and one quarter Syrah. Liquorice and sousbois on the nose, then Mediterranean warmth and sumptuous black fruit.

Domaine d'Antugnac, Pinot Noir, Côté Pierre Lys, Vin de Pays D'Oc -- Domaine d'Antugnac -- France
Pinot Noir, 13% alc.
The quest for a quality Pinot Noir outside Burgundy is an interesting one; so far the leading contenders are Central Otago in New Zealand and Carneros in California. The grape needs to ripen, and must not be green, but it is even less attractive if it gets too much sun and the fruit becomes jammy, flabby even. This is where the high altitude vineyards of Limoux, up to 500 metres at one point, come into play. And who better to make the wines than celebrated Burgundian and great friend of BBR, Jean Luc Terrier?

M.O.de Olivara Toro -- Marques de Olivara -- Spain
Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, 14.9% alc.
An award-winning new wine from the westerly Denominacion of Toro; where the Duero elides with the Douro, Spain cedes to Portugal and more and more of the Quintas occupy themselves with the production of fortified wine. The presence of Vega Sicilia at the Pintia Bodega has re-awakened interest in the wines of this area, an area where one has to temper the wilder excesses of the August sun by the means of careful canopy management. The dark brooding Tinto de Toro, as Tempranillo is known in these parts, is made at Olivara under the watchful eye of the famous winemaker Pascal Chatonnet. The best French oak is used for an extensive ageing regime which allows the savoury almost meaty character of the wine to soften somewhat and to emphasise the underlying black fruit quality, which is extremely impressive.

Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon, Mountain View Vintners, Napa Valley -- Mountain View Vintners -- United States
Cab.Sauvignon, 14% alc.
Spring Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon shows a tight fisted cassis fruit, that is immersed in a sea of minerality. With generous decanting, warmth & a (sub)prime T-bone steak the wine's fullsome red & black berried, chewy fruit can be coaxed out to reveal a sweet soul & a delicious St.Estephe-like stoniness. How refreshing to come across a Napa Cabernet which shows real minerally terroir & a singular personality & not the gloopy sweet fruit, big alcohol & overbearing vanillin oak more commonly associated with California. A breath of fresh air!
