Pinot Blanc, Vieilles Vignes, Domaine Rieffel (Stelvin) -- Domaine Lucas & André Rieffel -- France
Pinot Blanc, 13.5% alc.
The vintage was notably more successful in the lowly 'Bas-Rhin', the northern half confusingly, giving wines that have both freshness as well as substance. Lucas Rieffel's crunchy citrus stone, herbal beauty, sealed with a screw cap for extra ting, says it all!

Domaine d'Aupilhac, Les Cocalières Rouge, Coteaux du Languedoc -- Domaine D'Aupilhac -- France
Southern Rhône Blend, 14% alc.
Dom. D'Aupilhac is an acclaimed organic property located in the enclave of Montpeyroux, 36 km to the north of Montpellier. Sylvan Fadat is one of the most respected and capable winemakers in the Languedoc. The blend of the 2007 is made up of 32% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah, 28% Carignan, 15% Grenache and 5% Cinsault; the assemblage skilfully aged for 20 months in barrique. The wine has leather and licorice on the nose, a hint of soisbois perhaps, then a rich and very complete palate, with blackberry and cassis, a lick of pepper and and softly acquiescent tannins.

Dolcetto d'Alba, Cru Serraboella, Az. Agr. Cigliuti, Neive, Piedmont -- Cigliuti -- Italy
Dolcetto, 14% alc.
2007 has been perhaps an ideal season for Dolcetto: the relatively cool summer preserved the fresh violet cream aromas, along with those of plum skin. The Serraboella vineyard's limestone-rich clay soils brought great freshness and purity to the otherwise richly textured, morello black cherry fruit. A match for squid ink risotto.

Rioja Blanco, Finca Allende -- Finca Allende -- Spain
Viura, 13.5% alc.
The gregarious Miguel Angel Di Gregorio has always put a lot of effort into his white wine; in the way that some see white Hermitage as every bit as important as its red counterpart, he feels that white Rioja is a key part of Rioja's heritage and identity. Paradoxically, however, his method of expressing this is to make a modern style ,using new French oak of quite tight grained provenance.
With a blend divided equally between Malvasia and Viura, the 2007 has attractive tropical notes on the nose, backed up by hints of guava, fennel and lemon grass. The palate is generously textured, but not too plump; its oak buttress discrete but solid. The finish is creamy and rather indulgent. A wine that will accompany a variety of dishes, including lighter meats.

Casa Lapostolle Classic Cabernet Sauvignon, Rapel Valley, Chile -- Casa Lapostolle -- Chile
Cab.Sauvignon Blend, 13% alc.
Casa Lapostolle are the blue bloods of the Chilean wine world, their ownership boasting impressive French connections, directly through the Marnier family (of Grand Marnier fame) and indirectly through Champagne Roederer. The wines, unsurprisingly, marry the natural benevolence for which Chile is so famous, with an elegance and subtlety which has been nurtured by Bordelais wine-making guru, Michel Rolland.

The Bordeaux influence can be clearly detected in this wine, its elegance and complexity underlined by blending with the addition here of Carmenère, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc to the bed-rock of Cabernet Sauvignon (85%). The six months in French oak completes the Gallic influence. The additional bottle age has added refinement and an impressive depth of flavour.

Ostler Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, Sagittarius Vineyard -- Ostler Vineyard -- New Zealand
Sauvignon Blanc, 13% alc.
Pretty, finely detailed, spring nettle aromatics; the palate's dry (2 grams residual sugar), quite sophisticated in fact with refined creamy, lime and gooseberry flavours; a definite step up from run-of-the-mill Marlborough wine, thanks, no doubt, to its single Waihopai Valley vineyard source. Drinking now till 2011, as an aperitif, or with light cheesy dishes.
