Gevrey-Chambertin, Mes Favorites, Domaine Alain Burguet
--
Domain Alain Burguet
-- France
Pinot Noir, 13% alc. Alain Burguet makes this exceptional cuvée of Gevrey Chambertin from his favourite plots of old vines. It has exceptional density of flavour for a village wine and very good ageing potential. (Jasper Morris MW, BBR Buyer) |

Vacqueyras 'Les Clos' Domaine Montirius
--
Montirius
-- France
Southern Rhône Blend, 14% alc. From 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah, the wine has a charming nose of blackberries and truffle. Its texture is expansive and velvety, with all the charm of the vintage generously thrilling the palate. The smoky quality on the palate would make it a great match for chargrilled food as that method of cooking imparts similar flavours and the weight of the wine would stand up to the robust flavours of the meat. Also delicious with stronger flavoured meats like pigeon. Why not try cracking one open on a Sunday afternoon with some friends over and the barbecue lit? (Simon Field MW BBR Rhône Buyer) |

L'Ostal Cazes, Minervois la Livinière
--
L'Ostal Cazes
-- France
Southern Rhône Blend, 14% alc. Jean Michel Cazes, the doyen of Chateau Lynch Bages in Bordeaux, spent several years in the early part of this century searching for the ideal terroir to accompany his ‘Grand Vin de Bordeaux’. In the sleepy hamlet of La Livinière, its famous bell tower surrounded by Cyprus Trees and green oaks, Jean Michel located just such a place. Already recognised and rewarded with its own superior appellation, Minervois la Livinière goes from strength to strength and is now recognised as the origin of some the best red wines in the South of France. Made from 65% Syrah, 13% Carignan, 12 % Grenache and 10% Mourvèdre, and treated to 15 months in Barrique, the 2005 is an outstanding wine. The first impressions are of generosity and warmth, with black fruits, sousbois and subtle oak perfectly poised to lead one onto a palate which is equally seductive, the very fine and silky tannins providing more than adequate support for the impressive concentration of fruit. Perfect with game and hearty Southern fare. (Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer) |

Palistorti, Colline Lucchesi Rosso, Valgiano, Tuscany

Valgiano
-- Italy
Sangiovese, 14% alc. While the 05 remains pacy with red-fruited perfume, this 2006 blend of 70% Sangiovese, 15% Merlot, 15% Syrah is undoubtedly fuller and blacker, decadent almost with a minty, liquorice lift, while violet creams dominate the palate, such is the dense black chocolate texture and character of the palate; a wine that was vinified in 60% oak and 40% cement. Best tucked away for several years before serving with a shoulder of lamb. (David Berry Green, BBR Buyer) |

Vendimia, Rioja, Palacios Remondo
--
Bodegas Palacios Remondo
-- Spain
Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, 14% alc. A superb New-Style Rioja made by the magician Alvaro Palacios; with far more Garnacha than one may expect (50/50 Garnacha and Tempranillo) the wine is made by whole-bunch fermentation and is aged only briefly in oak barrels. If he believed in such things, Alvaro would describe it as a 'Joven'; the emphasis is certainly on the exuberant, with soft hedge-row flavours, and gentle spice to the fore. With Mediterranean charm, and a certain come-hither, forward, approach to life, this is a distinctly superior every-day drinker. (Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer) |

Alana Estate Pinot Noir, Martinborough, New Zealand
--
Alana Estate
-- New Zealand
Pinot Noir, 13% alc. The Martinborough terraces are the origins of the first great New Zealand Pinot Noirs, and they remain the focal point for Burundian styles, like this fine pinot, whose stylish red-berry fruit perfume and delicate oak spice with a seamlessly pure, strawberry flavour, opulence and silky texture make it a seductively rich, yet subtle Marlborough red. (Anthony Rose – 50 Best Wines - The Independent – 13 Dec 08) Chris 'Hopper' Archer has marked his inaugural vintage at this Martinborough estate with a tiny quantity (71 dozen bottled) of this excellent Pinot Noir, a selection of the best fruit (from clones 667, 777 and Abel) from their silty, calcareous gravel Terrace terroir. The result is a wine which shows both sensuality as well as breed. Dare I say it but the nose hints at Musigny, such is its heady smoky violet scent while the focussed palate is both suave and finely poised. Gorgeous now, this wine should develop beautifully over the next 5 to 8 years. Perfect with salmon. (David Berry Green - BBR Buyer) |
