Bourgogne Les Cras, Domaine Olivier Merlin
--
Olivier Merlin
-- France
Pinot Noir, 12.5% alc. Bourgogne Les Cras has blossomed since bottling. The bouquet is beautifully perfumed, a sensual aromatic style of red fruit pinot. The palate shows impressive purity too. A lovely burgundy. (Jasper Morris MW, BBR Buyer) |

Châteauneuf du Pape Blanc, Domaine Raymond Usseglio et Fils
--
Raymond Usseglio et Fils
-- France
White Rhône Blend, 14% alc. Stéphane Usseglio has been experimenting for some years with the blend of his white wines and in 2007 he feels he has just about got it right. 40% Grenache Blanc and 20% each of Roussanne, Clairette and Bourboulenc allow this white Châteauneuf du Pape wine to strike a fine balance between the traditional and the new, and its honey and beeswax texture is perfectly complemented by the lemon grass acidity on the finish. |

Viña Real, Reserva C.V.N.E.
--
C.V.N.E.
-- Spain
Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, 13.5% alc. Viña Real is usually seen as the Burgundy to Imperial’s Bordeaux, evidenced aesthetically by the shape of the bottle and, more profoundly, by gustatory differences relating to tannic structure and provenance of fruit. The majority of the fruit for Real comes from Rioja Alavesa, which, surely not a coincidence, is the only part of the Denominacion to have limestone in the soil. The blend here is 90% Tempranillo and 10% Garnacha; the perfume is classic Viña real, with an ethereal elegance and robust spicy note’ the palate is all velvet and plush, this is a luxuriant Rioja from a top vintage, already drinking nicely. Pulenta Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina
--
Pulenta Estate
-- Argentina
Malbec, 14% alc. Malbec in youth can rich and almost too powerful, marrying Indian spices, liqueur de cassis and notes that remind one of dried fruits that have been macerated. All framed in a natural and entirely seductive sweetness, needless to say. Pulenta’s success resides in the fact that all this has been harnessed, but then enhanced by careful ageing for a year in French oak. The result is both textured and restrained, with notes of morello cherry, plum and soft earth to the fore and a structure that will be an ideal match some of the region’s famous beef dishes.
