Berrys' Extra Ordinary Red Burgundy Maison Roche de Bellene -- Domaine de Bellene -- France
Pinot Noir, 12.5% alc.
Once upon a time Berrys offered both an own label basic red Burgundy and a reserve version, but it soon became clear that there is no point in going for the cheap option when it comes to pinot noir. Five years ago the idea of an Extra-Ordinary Red Burgundy, Bourgogne Rouge plus if you like, was born.

It was not difficult to decide on the producer – Nicolas Potel, now in the guise of his Maison Roche de Bellene, blends for us a splendid cuvée which always includes some wine from grander appellations to round it out.

Not that the succulent 2009 vintage needed much rounding out! Instead the trick was to blend a Bourgogne pinot noir with fruit and charm while maintaining an impeccable lightness of touch.
(Jasper Morris MW, BBR Buyer)

Roche de Bellene has blended this fabulous Pinot Noir to our specifications and has included wines from grander appellations for extra intensity of flavour. It exhibits pretty raspberry aromas with top notes of vanilla, while the palate offers a cornucopia of perfumed raspberries, strawberries and cherries. Depth of flavour, great poise and a lingering finish denote the quality of this wine. Superb with a wide range of red meat and poultry.

Crôzes-Hermitage, Cuvée Les Galets, Domaine Des Hauts Chassis -- Domaine Des Hauts Chassis -- France
Syrah/Shiraz, 12.5% alc.
This is such an archetype of quality Crozes-Hermitage wine that all other examples will have to be marked alongside it on the bench. Tapenade, blackberry, hints of violet, black pepper and wood smoke… it’s all there, and all perfectly balanced. We are delighted that M. Faugier has had the confidence to stop selling grapes to a prestigious négociant, and started to make wine himself.

Frank Faugieris a vigneron of the old school, only modestly successful at self-promotion. He used to sell all his grapes to the local co-operative and also to a certain M Jaboulet. This was a shame, because the location of the vines means that the grapes are inevitably of superior quality. Now he makes his own wine from his own grapes and the results are impressive indeed.

Ch. Ricardelle, Closablières, AOP Languedoc La Clape -- Ch. Ricardelle La Clape -- France
Southern Rhône Blend, 14% alc.
Château Ricardelle can be found in the dramatic and beautiful La Clape region in Côteaux du Languedoc, located in a balneal environment between the ancient cities of Narbonne and Beziers. Despite its rather unpromising name, La Clape is one of the most impressive wine-producing enclaves in Côteaux du Languedoc, and has just won a stand-alone status within the new Appellation D’Origine Protegée hierarchy. The soil is dominated by chalk and on top loose stones.

Closablières is the premium cuvée from Chateau Ricardelle made up of 50% Syrah, 30% Grenache and 20% Carignan, aged in 2-3 year old barrels for twelve months. The result is astonishingly good, with fine tannins, plenty of red and black fruit, and pleasing hints of spice and pepper, all beautifully integrated and with great length.

Primitivo 'Allegoria', Gioia del Colle, Pietraventosa, Puglia -- Pietraventosa -- Italy
Primitivo, 13.5% alc.
Marianna & Raffaele have judged their Puglian Primitivo just right. They’ve captured the juicy red & black berry wholesomeness of Primitivo while drawing on its cool origins in the deep chalky soil to keep it crunchy and agile to drink.

Allegoria’ is a 100% Primitivo, Gioia del Colle fermented only in stainless steel followed by a further 16 months, steel & bottle, prior to release; production approx. 3,600 bottles per annum. The Riserva enjoys a period of appassimento (partial grape desiccation) prior to fermentation, followed by 18 months in French tonneaux.

A warm, companiable wine to be lapped up this autumn, along with all manner of dishes.

Cape Chamonix, Rouge, Franschhoek, South Africa -- Chamonix -- South Africa
Other Varieties, 14% alc.
A Bordeaux-style wine blend containing Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec with a healthy dash of Petit Verdot, grown on highly suitable soils for these varietals featuring decomposed granite and sandy loam. Fermentation, both alcoholic and malolactic, takes place in tank with a 2-week maceration of the fruit, and the wine is then aged in old French oak barrels for 16 months before bottling.

The bouquet is deep and intense with hints of blackcurrant, mocha and plum. On the palate the tannins are very well managed, with a beguiling softness of texture and a balanced, long finish.

Esk Valley Vineyard Selection, Gimblett Gravels, Merlot/CS/Malbec -- Esk Valley Estate -- New Zealand
Other Varieties, 14% alc.
Hawke’s Bay on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island was quick to develop a reputation for its red wines from Bordeaux blends (and whites from chardonnay). As the region developed in size and sophistication, it became evident that the prime site, to some extent replicating the river-bed gravels of the Médoc, was the Gimblett Gravels sub-district which now has its own appellation. Here the free draining shingle soils provide a top quality, low vigour site for ripening the Bordeaux grape varieties

Esk Valley Winery is part of the Villa Maria Group, located on the site of the former Glenvale Winery (established 1933) since the late 1980s. Head winemaker Gordon Russell has been in charge since 1993. This wine was made from a blend of 39% Merlot, 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 24% Malbec. The individual varietal and vineyard parcels were aged separately in barrel for 12 months before being bottled.
