Chateau St. Georges, Cote Pavie St. Emilion Grand Cru -- Chateau St. Georges -- France
Merlot, 13.5% alc.
To our mind, Ch. St. Georges, Côte Pavie is making some of the best value wine that Bordeaux has to offer. The 2007 (80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc) provides the opportunity to purchase some cracking quality drinking Claret from an 'over-performer' of the vintage. Plummy in character but with enough spice and complexity to make it more than just another drinking wine, it will certainly grace the table of many a home.

Pinot Blanc, Barriques, Ostertag -- Domaine André Ostertag -- France
Pinot Blanc, 12% alc.
When it comes to Alsace, Andre Ostertag is without doubt one of the masters. He’s no self-publicist; quite the opposite in fact; he quietly gets on making fine-boned elegant wines for you to enjoy. Ostertag treats Pinot Blanc as the Burgundian grape that it is, rather than the sweeter versions of some producers - it is always the first grape he picks, only 10 days or so after the Burgundian vintage, because he wants a dry wine with no botrytis. Always majestic wines and magnificent to boot.

Domaine de Coudoulet, Chardonnay, Vin de Pays D'Oc -- Domaine de Coudoulet -- France
Chardonnay, 13% alc.
The sixth generation of Ournacs, Pierre-André and his brother Jean-Yves, now run this 16 hectare domaine in the south of France. Its chalk and clay soils are ideal for Chardonnay. Without any oak influence, this is clean and pure, with a lemon oil scent and a gentle minerality. It is very Burgundian; the wine combines the natural exuberant warmth that one associates with the South of France with the pleasing classy restraint of a Maçonnais

Torre de Barreda, Vino de la Tierra de Castilla, Juan de la Barreda -- Bodegas Juan de la Barreda -- Spain
Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, 12.5% alc.
Located an hour or so to the South East of Madrid, Torre de Barreda is situated on the hot flat and in all honesty somewhat unpromising planes of Castille. Father and son, both rather confusingly called Juan de la Barreda, have fashioned a wonderful wine from old vine Tempranillo, known as Cencibel down here.

The grapes are grown traditionally ‘en vasco’ then vinified even more traditionally in ‘tinaja’ epoxy resin-lined terracotta vessels. The result has, unsurprisingly, bags of personality and individuality, but equally surprisingly elegance and a rather sophisticated structure. The 2009 boasts fruit of a ripe but not raisined nature, acidity of a natural and not artificial (that is to say added) disposition and warmth which does not threaten to become intemperate.

Alpamanta Estate, Natal Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina -- Alpamanta Estate -- Argentina
Malbec, 14.5% alc.
The vineyards of Mendoza are amongst the most scenic in the world; they may lack the precipitous drama of the Douro or the Mosel Valleys, but they more than make up for this with their extraordinarily beautiful back-drop of the Andes Mountains. Located at just less than 1000 metres above sea-level, they bask in a wonderful fresh air and enjoy the natural irrigation afforded by the melting snow from the mountains.

No better place for a biodynamic winemaker of the calibre of peripatetic Dutchman, Andrej Razumovsky, whose surname, coincidentally, is shared with a very famous set of mid-period quartets by Beethoven. His vines are all in the most southerly part of Mendoza, Ugarteche, which falls within the district of Laján de Cayo.

The biodynamic approach involves natural yeasts, minimal use of sulphates and adherence to use of specific treatments such as camomile, Ortega nettle and dandelion, all diligently applied to coincide with lunar and tidal patterns.

The resulting wine, which is actually a blend of 85% Malbec and 15% Syrah, is complex, with an almost ethereal character; it dances on the palate, its ripe and generous fruit beautifully integrated with a gentle spicy kick at the back of the palate.

Errazuriz, Max Chardonnay Casablanca Valley, Chile -- Errazuriz -- Chile
Chardonnay, 13.5% alc.
The majority of the fruit for the wine affectionately known as ‘The Max’ is sourced from Errazuriz’s premium vineyard at La Escultura in the Casablanca Valley close to Aconcagua itself but a little nearer to the Pacific Ocean. . The deep sandy loam soils here are sufficiently poor to control vine vigour with the cool climate affording freshness and focus to the fruit.

Fermentation takes place in tank but then the wine is aged for ten months ‘sur lie’ in French barrels, adding complexity and roundness. After a very hot mid-summer in early 2010, the weather was milder but not wet at harvest time, perfect conditions in other words; this is a complex wine with a firm citric grip and a mineral substratum to provide an ideal foundation for the riper more tropical elements which are also evidenced.

The extended ageing has contributed a buttery richness, but the natural yeasts ensure that a sense of terroir has been preserved.
