Ch. de Fonbel, Grand Cru, St Emilion -- Château de Fonbel, St. Emilion -- France
Merlot, 13% alc.
Made by the same team as the legendary Ch. Ausone it is hardly surprising that Fonbel's 2007 is so impressive. Made with 70% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petit Verdot and 3% of the rarely seen Carmenère, the wine's pure nose of plums and smoky black fruit leads seamlessly into a dense yet finely textured palate of concentrated, cool blackberries and peppery spice. This classy, succulent wine is easily as good as many St Emilions double the price.

The grapes are fermemnted in stainless steel tanks before going into oak barrels for maturation, 30% new. The wine is bottled about 10 months later. In style it is fairly typical of many St Emilions of this class, but it benefits from the meticulous attention to detail which Alain Vauthier brings to all his wines, and this raises its quality above the norm, such that it represents one of the most under-valued wines in the area.

Beaune, Les Pertuisots, 1er Cru, Domaine Jean-Yves Devevey -- Jean-Yves Devevey -- France
Pinot Noir, 13% alc.
Beaune providers terrific value premier cru wines, thus far escaping the inflation in prices of the Côte de Nuits.

From humble beginnings, Jean-Yves Devevey has developed a small but perfectly formed domaine making both red and white wines. Jean-Yves started with a small holding of basic Bourgogne Rouge and Aligoté from modest locations and nothing but a shed behind the house to work in. Through hard work and considerable skill he has built up a successful business, part vigneron, part merchant, with a properly equipped cuverie and cellar to hand.

Since 1999 he has also owned half a hectare of Premier Cru Beaune Les Pertuisots where exemplary farming methods have steadily improved quality each year. Les Pertuisots, which means ‘the little drains’, lies on a gentle slope about halfway between the city of Beaune and the border with Pommard.
The wine is aged in barrel for 18 months before bottling.

Lirac, La Reine des Bois, Domaine de la Mordorée -- Domaine de la Mordorée -- France
Southern Rhône Blend, 14% alc.
Lirac is one of the older appellations in the southern Rhône which has been slightly forgotten. This wine shows that it is time for it to be revitalised and for its reputation to be re-assessed.  La Reine des Bois has a majestic colour and come-hither nose, which marries spice-box and macerated fruit, then a palate which is poised and very complete; completely delicious in fact!

Sancerre Rouge, Domaine André Dezat -- André Dezat -- France
Pinot Noir, 12.5% alc.
One of the most respected of Loire wine estates, as well as a long-standing Berrys' supplier, the Dezat family's 38 hectares covers 6 villages in Sancerre and 4 in Pouilly-Fumé incorporating the key soil types of 'terres blanches' (ancient active limestone), 'caillottes' (stony clay) and 'silex' (flint). This ripe understated Sancerre delivers hugh pleasure, and is model of precision and elegance.

Cillar de Silos Tempranillo, Ribera del Duero -- Cillar de Silos -- Spain
Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, 14.5% alc.
A modern-style Ribera del Duero made by a young team with great skill; the fruit is ripe and rounded yet the structure is solid and the tannins fine; in short a very impressive effort!

The Cillar de Silos Crianza 2008 is a forward and juicy wine dominated by ripe blackberry fruit, with hints of chocolate, cedar and vanilla in the mid-palate.

The wine is 100% Tempranillo and has been aged for 13 months in French barrels, some of which are new. The tannins are rounded and elegant and the wine has poise and structure behind the generous fruit. Ideal with tapas such as chorizo or hard cheeses and roasted meat, especially lamb. The altitude of the vineyards has lent a fine and balancing acidity. Keep up the good work Amelia and Oscar!

Mt Hillary, McLaren Vale Shiraz South Australia -- Gemtree Vineyards -- Australia
Syrah/Shiraz, 14% alc.
A rich but well defined Shiraz from Australia’s McLaren Vale. What I like about this is that it’s unashamedly warm-climate Aussie Shiraz, but it’s got great fruit definition and vitality – it’s not one of those dead fruit wines bolstered by American oak. Still quite tannic and grippy, with the potential to develop nicely in bottle. And very drinkable now.
Warming up with Shiraz after a freezing afternoon of rugby, The Wine Anorak, Jamie Goode, 8 February 2012

A beautifully fragrant bouquet of spicy plums and blackberry, with hints of spice and a dash of smokiness. On the palate there are notes of dark chocolate to support deep blackberry flavours, rounded off with pleasing, fresh acidity. The tannins are ripe, the French oak very well integrated, and the whole ensemble feels very harmonious in the mouth without ever becoming remotely blowsy or overpowering. A typical example of the complexity and elegance synonymous with McLaren Vale Shiraz.

The wine was awarded 5 stars in James Halliday’s highly respected reference book on Australian wines in 2009, 2010, 2011 & 2012
