Chateau St. Georges, Cote Pavie St. Emilion Grand Cru
--
Chateau St. Georges
-- France
Merlot, 13.5% alc. To our mind, Ch. St. Georges, Côte Pavie is making some of the best value wine that Bordeaux has to offer. The 2007 (80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc) provides the opportunity to purchase some cracking quality drinking Claret from an 'over-performer' of the vintage. Plummy in character but with enough spice and complexity to make it more than just another drinking wine, it will certainly grace the table of many a home. |

Sancerre Blanc, André Dezat
--
André Dezat
-- France
Sauvignon Blanc, 12.5% alc. Compared with the warm 2009s, 2010 has bestowed all the qualities one would hope for in a fine Loire Sauvignon Blanc vintage, and of course the Andre Dezat family have yet again performed. Drawn from a total of 15 ha (of which 6 is in the home village of Verdigny), across an array of soils of 'terres blanches', 'caillottes' (and smaller 'grillottes') and 'silex', Dezat's holding all boasts thigh-like vines planted in 1967. Tasting in the icy conditions of January 2011 I perceived notes of nettle, mint, spice even, lime/lemon zip, crystalline freshness along with a waxy texture and fabuolous ripeness. This is definitely a vintage in which Dezat's Sancerre & Pouilly-Fume shine brightly. Drinking now but will improve. (David Berry Green, BBR Buyer) |

'San Biagio' Rosso Toscano IGT, Lisini, Tuscany
--
Lisini
-- Italy
Sangiovese, 14.5% alc. This is a great introduction to the elegant wines of Lisini, whose Brunello di Montalcino is a classic. First made in 2002, San Biagio is 100% Sangiovese Grosso grown on nearby territory that doesn't qualify as Brunello or Rosso di Montalcino. Undergoing a cooler fermentation in cement to capture the wine's perfume, & backed by the tremendous 2009 vintage, this has Montalcino written all over it; boasting a minerally core & a soft, fleshy underbelly. Great for supper, or while you wait for your Brunello to come round. (David Berry Green, BBR Buyer) |

Kenwood Vineyards, Russian River Pinot Noir
--
Kenwood Vineyards
-- United States
Pinot Noir, 13.5% alc. The Russian River flows into the Pacific Ocean so the valley in which it lies acts as a natural channel for the cooling breezes from the sea. This, together with the poor rocky soil of the valley, creates excellent conditions in which to ripen Pinot Noir. 2009 yielded a small crop but the fruit was healthy and concentrated. In very good years such as this the winemaker sometimes adds 10% of whole bunches to the vats, rather than de-stemming every bunch, as this adds structure and body to the finished wine. After fermentation this Pinot Noir spends 11 months in French oak, none of it new, varying from 1-3 year-old barrels. The bouquet displays soft red fruit aromas, raspberries and cherries with a hint of spice. On the palate there is real concentration, with silky texture, and a long, clean finish with fresh balancing acidity. (Alun Griffiths MW, BBR Wine Director) |

Te Mata Estate, Elston Chardonnay, Hawkes Bay, New Zealand
--
Te Mata Estate
-- New Zealand
Chardonnay, 13.5% alc. Hawke’s Bay on the east coast of New Zealand’s North Island was quick to develop a reputation for its red wines from Bordeaux blends and whites from chardonnay. Te Mata, whose name derives from a local Maori legend, is the oldest established winery in the region. The first vineyards were planted on the property as long ago as 1892, though it has been under John Buck’s stewardship since the 1970s that Te Mata has really come to the fore. Originally a single vineyard wine Elston has, from 1989, become an assemblage of the finest wines from eleven plots within Te Mata Estate's six Chardonnay vineyards. The unusual 2010 growing season has resulted in an extraordinary Elston. Already low cropping chardonnay vines had their yield further reduced by a cold snap during the spring flowering. This, coupled with the mild summer heat and an extended dry autumn, have produced an arresting intensity of aroma and flavour: Dry yet rich with rounded acidity and superb balance. The white stone fruit character continues from the nose along with notes of biscuit and citrus. This is a richly textured wine with exuberant fruit characters. (Jasper Morris MW) |

Mezes Maly, Dry Furmint
--
The Royal Tokaji Company
-- Hungary
Furmint, 13.5% alc. It is not commonly known that the vineyard region in Hungary responsible for Tokaji wine production was classified in the late 18th century, long before such a classification was established in Bordeaux. Mezes Maly is a 19-hectare vineyard which is one of only two in this area which boasts First Growth status. A wine with the single-vineyard designation is only offered in exceptionally good vintages; in lesser years it will be blended into one of the other Royal Tokaji Co. cuvées and thus greatly add to the quality of that particular wine. The loess top-soil habitually provides a wine of gloriously floral aroma, with honeyed, stone-fruit notes, and great richness and smoothness on the palate. The grapes are fermented in wooden vats with natural yeasts and the wine is then aged in new oak casks for a further 11 months before bottling. Made from 100% Furmint, this is an astonishing wine with stunning complexity. After the characteristic bouquet mentioned above, the palate seems to alternate between dryness and sweetness; it is in fact dry, but has such opulence that its texture defies description. There is ample acidity although the perception of it is muted. I would drink it with fine fish in a cream sauce, or with canapé-type food, or even with pate where its richness comes into its own.
