Ch. Grand-Puy-Lacoste, Pauillac
--
Château Grand-Puy-Lacoste
-- France
Cab.Sauvignon Blend, 12.5% alc. Ch Grand Puy Lacoste belongs to the Borie family, proud owners of two other Classified Growths in Ducru-Beaucaillou and Haut-Batailley. Grand Puy Lacoste is run by Francois Xavier Borie who favours classicism in the style of the wine rather than seeking to make a flamboyant modern expression of claret. The grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks before being aged in wood (50% new) for 18 months. The terroir is deep gravel over limestone, so it is unsurprising that the wine tastes like a benchmark Pauillac, with cedar and tobacco notes coming into play as it gains in maturity. 2002 was not hailed as a fine vintage at birth, but as always happens with so-called lesser vintages there are always some exceptions, and one of the challenges for us is to find those over-performing estates as the wines can often be very good value. Nuits-St Georges, Chaignots,1er Cru Maison Nicolas Potel
--
Maison Nicolas Potel
-- France
Pinot Noir, 13% alc. Excellent value Burgundy from a smart producer and an accessible vintage. Chaignots has a touch of class! Les Chaignots, the name probably being derived from the French for ‘little oaks’, is situated on the northern side of Nuits St Georges, at mid slope with a varied sgradient of between eight and 20 per cent. The soil is more alluvial than in the vineyards south of Nuits, with plenty of fine gravel washed down over the centuries by the little river Meuzin. Wines from Les Chaignots tend to combine the refinement of Vosne Romanée along with the structure and power of Nuits St Georges. The wine has been made by negociant Nicolas Potel, before he left the business which still bears his name. Nicolas made his reputation by delivering classical Burgundy at affordable prices. The 2007 vintage, one of the earliest harvests on record, offers very juicy wines which are a delight to drink even while still very young. Their charm is in the fruit, rather than the structure. Condrieu, La Loye, Domaine Jean-Michel Gerin
--
Domaine Jean Michel Gerin
-- France
Viognier, 13.5% alc. Viognier is famously capricious; it likes the steep granite slopes of Condrieu more than anywhere else in the world. There is no dispute here, but should proof be required, this example provides it with real aplomb! Jean-Michel manages to combine elegance and concentration in his Condrieu, La Loye cuvée. Notes of spring flowers, honeysuckle and dried apricots are complemented perfectly by a firm and flinty streak of mineral acidity which lends structure and shape. Jean-Michel Gerin is one of the great characters of the Northern Rhône. His father was the mayor of Ampuis and helped to put the steep slopes of Côte Rôtie on the vinous map, along with a certain M Guigal. Jean Michel has continued the good work, farming some of the most dramatic and beautiful vineyards in Europe. His Condrieu vineyards are located to the north of the appellation, and therefore benefit from the famous biotite granite, which engenders wines which combine the viscosity for which the region is famous and an extraordinarily rich mineral finish, which adds grip and structure, but never at the expense of elegance. Hermitage Rouge, Les Miaux, Domaine Ferraton
--
Domaine Ferraton
-- France
Syrah/Shiraz, 13.5% alc. Hermitage is one of the most famous of all French wines, its name associated down the centuries with a beguiling combination of power and finesse, admirably displayed in this example from Ferraton. Les Méaux is a brand name rather than a specific vineyard, the nomenclature a not entirely successful amalgam of the communes of Le Méal and Les Dionnières. The Syrah grapes were hand-picked from old vines on steep alluvial terraces and then aged for 14 months in barriques, some of which were new. The result is classic Hermitage from a forward and very approachable vintage; elegance and power entwined, with great persistence on the finish. The age of the vines has ensured an impressive concentration in what was, for some, a tricky vintage. Not, it seems, for our friends at Ferraton. (Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer) |

Barolo, Serralunga d'Alba, Az. Agr. Giovanni Rosso
--
Giovanni Rosso di Davide Rosso
-- Italy
Nebbiolo, 14% alc. A tiny strip of vineyard on the way into Baudana, Serralunga, planted a long time ago and now producing tiny clusters of Nebbiolo that bear more than a passing resemblance to a Richebourg...he wishes! But as part of the blend, it adds a profundity and lushness, making this benchmark, Vosne-esque Barolo. Davide’s particularly chuffed with his 2006s. This a blend of his 7 Serralunga vineyards, vinified in stainless steel, cement and large French oak botte. It captures both the high quality, licorice zing of the vintage along with the magical minerality of the village. David Berry Green, BBR Buyer, August 2011 |

Pago de los Capellanes Reserva, Ribera del Duero
--
Bodegas Pago de los Capellanes
-- Spain
Tempranillo/Tinto Fino, 13.5% alc. From the clay and limestone soils of the high plateau of Pedrosa in the Ribera del Duero, this aromatic Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo) wine is richly concentrated with mulberry and black cherry fruit aromas and flavours, all framed by a veneer of stylish, spicy new oak and bright damsony acidity.
The wine includes 10% of Cabernet Sauvignon and has spent spent 18 months in French oak and was bottled unfiltered. Purple-colored, it has an uplifting perfume of pain grille, scorched earth, violets, cinnamon, and blackberry liqueur, then a dense rich and velvety palate, pleasingly decadent but with a refreshing cerebral twist on the finish. |
