Château St. Georges, Côte Pavie St Emilion Grand Cru -- Chateau St. Georges -- France
Cab.Sauvignon Blend, 13.5% alc.
To our mind, Ch. St. Georges, Côte Pavie is making some of the best value wine that Bordeaux has to offer. The 2006 is approachable now, if given some air, but will be perfect in 12-18 months time. The wine has luscious dark, broody fruit that is underpinned by well integrated tannin and cigar-box spice.

Savigny-lès-Beaune, Benjamin Leroux -- Benjamin Leroux -- France
Pinot Noir, 12.5% alc.
This is the red equivalent of Benjamin’s delicious white Auxey-Duresses, an elegant Burgundy with vigorous raspberry and plum fruit, presented in a delicious style which is approachable early. And with 12.5% alcohol, it gives you a better than average chance of making it through to the curtain call.

Alpamanta Estate, Natal Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina -- Alpamanta Estate -- Argentina
Malbec, 14.5% alc.
The vineyards of Mendoza are amongst the most scenic in the world; they may lack the precipitous drama of the Douro or the Mosel Valleys, but they more than make up for this with their extraordinarily beautiful back-drop of the Andes Mountains. Located at just less than 1000 metres above sea-level, they bask in a wonderful fresh air and enjoy the natural irrigation afforded by the melting snow from the mountains.

No better place for a biodynamic winemaker of the calibre of peripatetic Dutchman, Andrej Razumovsky, whose surname, coincidentally, is shared with a very famous set of mid-period quartets by Beethoven. His vines are all in the most southerly part of Mendoza, Ugarteche, which falls within the district of Laján de Cayo.

The biodynamic approach involves natural yeasts, minimal use of sulphates and adherence to use of specific treatments such as camomile, Ortega nettle and dandelion, all diligently applied to coincide with lunar and tidal patterns.

The resulting wine, which is actually a blend of 85% Malbec and 15% Syrah, is complex, with an almost ethereal character; it dances on the palate, its ripe and generous fruit beautifully integrated with a gentle spicy kick at the back of the palate.

Mezes Maly, Dry Furmint -- The Royal Tokaji Company -- Hungary
Furmint, 13.5% alc.
It is not commonly known that the vineyard region in Hungary responsible for Tokaji wine production was classified in the late 18th century, long before such a classification was established in Bordeaux. Mezes Maly is a 19-hectare vineyard which is one of only two in this area which boasts First Growth status. A wine with the single-vineyard designation is only offered in exceptionally good vintages; in lesser years it will be blended into one of the other Royal Tokaji Co. cuvées and thus greatly add to the quality of that particular wine.

The loess top-soil habitually provides a wine of gloriously floral aroma, with honeyed, stone-fruit notes, and great richness and smoothness on the palate. The grapes are fermented in wooden vats with natural yeasts and the wine is then aged in new oak casks for a further 11 months before bottling. Made from 100% Furmint, this is an astonishing wine with stunning complexity. After the characteristic bouquet mentioned above, the palate seems to alternate between dryness and sweetness; it is in fact dry, but has such opulence that its texture defies description. There is ample acidity although the perception of it is muted. I would drink it with fine fish in a cream sauce, or with canapé-type food, or even with pate where its richness comes into its own.
