Ch. Villa Bel-Air, Graves
--
Château Villa Bel Air
-- France
Cab.Sauvignon Blend,
13% alc.
This is a benchmark Graves, showing both the generosity and the earthy, savoury
notes that are so typical of its origins. However, the suave interpretation
given by the team from Lynch-Bages gives a modern gloss to Graves’ more
robust characteristics, with the result that this is an immediately gratifying
wine, front-loaded with bright, fresh red berry fruit. The palate reasserts the
sense of place, with a note of graphite mingling with the soft fruit notes.
This really is tremendous value for money, pretty much ideal to drink now, but
with the substance to still deliver over the next five years.
(Mark Pardoe MW, BBR Wholesale - Tasted at the St Emilion, Pomerol, Graves
and Sauternes Cellar Tasting, 03/12/09)
True to its origins in Graves the wine is modern in style, bursting with
gorgeous fruit and underpinned by ripe tannins. It shows real complexity on the
nose. Seductive blackcurrant fruit with fruit cake and spice flavours too. On
the palate, the tannins are firm but not tight and the lush, rounded fruit that
help to make it expressive enough to enjoy now. The acidity and body are in
balance and a streak of Graves minerality finish off the long length admirably.
This is an approachable style of wine from a fabulous vintage- at a very
reasonable price, considering the quality on show here!

Savigny-lès-Beaune, Les Hauts Jarrons, 1er Cru, Nicolas Potel
--
Maison Nicolas Potel
-- France
Pinot Noir,
13% alc.
Nicolas Potel is one of Burgundy’s most charismatic wine-makers. This
Savigny-lès-Beaune vineyard, Les Hauts Jarrons, owned by Nicolas
himself, nestles on a steep slope just below the main Paris autoroute. The
youngest vines here are over thirty years old, helping to ensure concentration
of flavour. The 2006 vintage was sold under the Nicolas Potel label, but future
vintages will be as Domaine Potel. This is a beautifully elegant, refined and
perfumed Savigny. Aromatic notes of red cherry and peony dominate, with a
deliciously refined texture on the palate.

Saint Aubin Le Charmois, 1er Cru, Domaine Jean-Claude Bachelet
--
Jean-Claude Bachelet
-- France
Chardonnay,
13% alc.
St Aubin is fairly evenly divided between red and white wines and both provide
excellent value. The Premier Cru Le Charmois is the closest vineyard to
Chassagne-Montrachet and benefits from a warm micro-climate.This is a rounded,
generous white Burgundy that is starting to show all its charm. Enjoyable on
its own but even better alongside a dish of pasta with a creamy, seafood sauce
or a chicken fricassée.

Barbera d'Alba Santo Stefano di Perno, Monforte d'Alba, Mascarello
--
Giuseppe Mascarello e Figlio
-- Italy
Barbera,
14% alc.
"The wine's high quality and elegance owes much to the elevated single Santo
Stefano vineyard, located in the Monforte d'Alba hamlet of Perno, with its deep
iron-rich marl and sandstone soils. Sage and red cherry fruit fruit aromas
pepper the very fine nose, while the palate continues in this vein, being very
refined, suave, woven with the subtlest of structure and great breed; in fact
such is the wine's race and vineyard resonance that it reminds one more of
Nebbiolo than Barbera. Very senior...drinking now and over the next 5 years.
Excellent with any wild mushroom dish." (David Berry Green - BBR Buyer)

Rioja Blanco, Finca Allende
--
Finca Allende
-- Spain
Viura,
14% alc.
White Rioja of old was made in a deliberately oxidative fashion, often given a
lengthy up-bringing in American oak. Its distinctive taste was often a rather
unwholesome marriage that brought to mind vanillin on the one hand and
over-cooked vegetables on the other. Not to everyone’s taste in other
words. Miguel Angel has re-written the rules, and his superb white Rioja is
aged in tightly-grained French oak, its roughly equal division of Viura and
Malvasia lending, respectively, texture and aromatics.

Lake Hayes Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough, New Zealand (Stelvin)
--
Amisfield Estate
-- New Zealand
Sauvignon Blanc,
13% alc.
Pale staw in colour and a fresh, zingy nose of gooseberries, nettles and
new-mown grass. Soft, dry and full on the palate, with hints of tropical fruit,
gauva, grapefruit and pineapple. A fine example of Marlborough Sauvignon
Blanc(Alun Griffiths MW, Wine Director)
