Wrattonbully is one of the cooler sites within South Australia, blessed with warm days and cool nights, and as such is an ideal location in which to produce an elegant style of Chardonnay. The Nolan family set out to make a restrained wine in which the natural Australian ripeness is tempered by crisp acidity and a minimal oak influence. The grapes are actually fermented in stainless steel tanks, all bar 8% of the crop which is fermented in French oak. This latter percentage imbues the wine with a degree of hazelnutty richness and breadth, while never remotely approaching stylistically the over-oaked, ponderous examples which seemed fashionable a decade or so ago. The wine shows a wonderfully floral, citrus freshness with finesse to match its natural weight. It reminds me sometimes of a good Pouilly Fuisse in style.
