2009 Barbera d'Alba, Cascina Fontana, Piedmont

Barbera d'Alba, Cascina Fontana, Piedmont
Bottled in July 2011, Mario Fontana made just 450 cases of this seminal wine; a wine we’ve bought for the first time. Why the ‘first time’? Because Mario’s Barbera’s had by his own admission, up till 2009, tended towards a more rustic, reductive style of Barbera, while this one flows with succulent plum skin fruit. I recall Mario explaining to me how he’d achieved this startling result: more racking, more attention in the cantina, a cold stabilisation that occurred naturally during winter…that & a few well chosen words of advice from his friend Davide Rosso (of Giovanni Rosso).

Made from a combination of 60% Sinio & 40% Castiglione Falletto fruit, aged for circa 12 months in used barriques, you feel the classy roll of Castiglione together with the crunch of Sinio, a village lying just beyond Serralunga. This wine’s all about texture & appearance: suaveness, fluidity, brightness, intensity, purity. They don’t call him ‘Super Mario’ for nothing! Delicious with all manner of primi pasta piatti! Will keep.
