The 2006 Tapanappa Whalebone Vineyard Merlot cones from hand-picked grapes which were totally de-stemmed before being fermented in 1-ton fermentation tubs. The malolactic fermentation took place in barriques, 70% new and 30% one-year-old, and the wine was racked 4 times during its 20-month sojourn in wood. After a light egg-white fining the wine was bottled unfiltered.

A powerful bouquet of eucalyptus, aniseed and mint interwoven with ripe plums gives way to a dense, intense palate of more plums with berry fruit. There is a lovely texture, elegant weave, and exceptionally finely-wrought tannins. The vintage was marked by a heat spike in January and this warmth created not only the ripeness of fruit but also the maturity of tannin which is such a feature of the vintage. Quite soft now after 5 years ageing, and the finish is long and balanced.
