2010 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de Marcoux

Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de Marcoux
A blend dominated by Grenache and Mourvèdre, with 12% shared between Syrah and Cinsault, this wine has attractive floral aromatics, backed up by blackberries and a hint of chocolate. The palate is equally seductive with herbs from the kitchen garden balanced by notes of mandarin and chocolate again, this time white chocolate. A wonderful mineral finish completes this most impressive tableau.
Simon Field MW, BBR Buyer, February 2012

We are delighted to welcome to our list this famous property which is owned and run by the charming sisters Sophie and Catherine Armenier. The synergy between England’s oldest wine merchant and one of the oldest families in The Rhône should be obvious, although, unusually BBR may have been beaten in terms of longevity as Marcoux can trace roots back to the 15th century, whereas BBR was only founded in 1698!. The property owns 17 hectares in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, its vines mainly located to the south of the appellation. They are certified as organic and their wines are always wonderfully pure, which is increasingly important as the sugar levels, especially in Grenache, continue to escalate.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de Marcoux
Bright crimson with a pale rim. Meaty/spicy. Absolutely typical Châteauneuf. Sweet start and then sinews. Fine tannins and (just) enough freshness on the finish. Fades a little fast but is very ambitious. Reminds me a bit of Cos 2009! Clean but a bit formulaic.

Chateauneuf-du-Pape, Domaine de Marcoux
The 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape (74% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre, 9% Syrah and 3% Cinsault aged two-thirds in cement tanks and one-third in wood foudres) has a dense ruby/purple color, a sweet nose of floral-infused blueberry liqueur, a striking minerality, impressive concentration, and a solid, dense core of fruit and glycerin. This is a classic and potentially long-lived Marcoux that should drink well for 15 or more years.
