2010 Bianco, Sibiola IGT, Altea Illotto, Sardinia

Bianco, Sibiola IGT, Altea Illotto, Sardinia
A blend of mainly Nasco, an indigenous variety associated more with making dessert wine, along with a pinch of Vermentino, this is a sunny yet salty dry white from the Sibiola locality just north of Cagliari, from fruit grown on calcareous clay soils.

The nose sings with white flower notes, while the medium bodied palate is limy pure. A rich fleshy mandarin fruited personality and intensity announces the presence of Nasco, while throughout there’s a great sense of purity and clarity; thanks no doubt to the combination of stainless-steel vinification and organic fruit used to make this wine.

The salty lick on the finish reminds us of the vineyard’s 20km proximity to the sea, whose saline breezes criss-cross the island constantly. Drinking now with sea fish. (ps. If you’re looking for the vintage, it’s cunning disguised as a lot number as IGT (Vino a Indicazione Geografica, the category below DOC) wines are not required to show the vintage!). Limited quantity available!

Bianco, Sibiola IGT, Altea Illotto, Sardinia
Based largely on the indigenous Nasco grape , Altea Illotto released its first wine in 2000. This more recent offering shows subtle hints of limecurd , pollen and red berries . A juicy attack on the palate reveals white flowers , citrus , an attractive texture and a savoury undercoat.
Decanter, November 2012.
